A king mattress is only a good idea if you can still walk around it. Enter your bedroom’s size to see which mattress sizes fit with comfortable walkways on both sides and at the foot of the bed.

How much space to leave

Interior designers typically recommend at least 24 in (61 cm) of walkway around a bed, and 30–36 in (76–91 cm) for comfortable movement. Add more where a dresser drawer or closet door opens. Remember that frames and headboards add several inches to the mattress size.

FAQ

What’s the difference between a king and a California king?

A king is 4 in wider (76 vs 72 in); a California king is 4 in longer (84 vs 80 in). Choose a California king if you’re over about 6 ft tall.

Can two adults share a full bed?

They can, but each gets only 27 in of width — the same as a crib mattress. A queen gives 30 in each and is the minimum most couples find comfortable.
